Hypoglycemia detection in people with type 1 diabetes via smartphone voice recordings

SRF News: Detecting hypoglycemia in voice recordings

A research team led by MeHDI & ORN co-director Dr. Christoph Stettler has shown that early signs of hypoglycemia in people with type 1 diabetes can be detected through simple smartphone voice recordings. By analyzing subtle changes in pitch, clarity, and stability, an algorithm accurately identified low blood sugar levels.

Science Night 2025

What does sugar water have to do with biomedical sensors? How can we harness big data for predictive modeling? What is inflammation... and why do patients respond differently to treatments? At 'Lange Nacht der Forschung', we took participants on an interactive journey through our clinical research spanning fundamental science, sensor technology, and clinical data. Participants discovered how digital tools transform our understanding of common and rare diseases. Hands-on bio-chemical measurements and interactive quizzes revealed the complexities of our interdisciplinary research. Participants learned firsthand how science & technology are shape future healthcare.

Patient Outreach Event 2025

On October 14, 2025 MeHDI & ORN, supported by the University Clinic for Endocrinology, Diabetology and Metabolism and the University Clinic for Rheumatology and Immunology at Inselspital, with contributions from the Department of Clinical Research and Diabetes Center Bern hosted the event “Aktuelle Forschung zu Entzündung, Stoffwechsel, Muskel & Knochen – Erleben. Verstehen. Mitgestalten.” at sitem Insel. Participants received insights into current/planned research projects and study results and engaged in dialogue with researchers to actively shape the future research agenda. It was a lively evening during which presenters and participants could learned from and inspired one another.

MeHDI & ORN Launch

On August 22, 2025, MeHDI & ORN officially launched at Anna Seiler Haus, Insel Campus. MeHDI & ORN members from different departments and clinics joined to learn about the joint initiative's vision and mission, hear about research efforts from fellow members, and to engage in lively discussions on future projects and initiatives. The conversations continued at the apéro during members were able to further connect. The MeHDI & ORN board was very pleased with the turnout and is excited to see how these initial conversations transform and materialize into future research projects.
